I almost passed out in the middle of a case. It was freaking scary.
I got very dehydrated all of a sudden and started getting the black spots in my vision. I told the circulator that I wanted first lunch and like 5 minutes later I said "I need to scrub out NOW"....It was the weirdest feeling in my life.
I have never passed out in my life but I came damn close.
I normally stay and finish that case til completion...but the last 2 times it was 26 hours and 17 hours and they didn't want me to stay the whole thing because of what happened...so I was for about 9 until they got one of the only few people there that know the case like I do to scrub in and finish. She's there til 11 tonight anyway, plus she's a much better scrub than I am so it shouldn't be an issue....but I stay the whole case cuz I know he likes one scrub the entire case cuz there's so much shit.
This is my setup for my DIEP Flap after me using for 9 hours to this point...All this shit, except my Plastic String and Retractors at the top go to a specific place. I hope they all got back to where they need to be. I'm sure they did...

So...ever since becoming a surgical tech I have kinda been specialized. I pretty much only do Plastic/Neuro/ENT cases. On top of that, while I do my share of Neuro and ENT I have also kind of become the Plastics guy.
One Dr., knowing I'm new has kinda taken advantage of the fact and recruited me to do his cases, well...mostly one case in particular. His DIEP Flaps. This stands for Deep Interior Epigastric Perferators. This cases can take up to 12-16 hours because basically it's a bi-lateral Mastectomy followed by an incision in lower abdomen to located the vessels feeding the fat in the stomache area...we then take all that fat and move it to form the new breasts...connecting vessels in the chest to the vessels that we took from the abdomen. I'm crazy for doing all these cases but it's hella nice OT and the fact that most people have years before they have "their" Dr. that they work with all the time and wants them in the room and shit...I had "my" Dr. in 2 months...lol. I was told just not to say anything in the Hospital much about that cuz jealously and backstabbing runs rampant in the O.R. It's like fucking high school.
Anyway, on Friday this particular flap SUCKED. Nothing would go right with it. We had everything set and then we notice a problem in one of the breasts after it was closed so we had to go back in with the scope. This was at about 6:30am on Saturday. This case started at 7:30am Friday. I stay from start to finish for these DIEP flaps. I didn't even get a break from about 2:30PM til about 2AM. At about 8:30 I was just winded. Everyone was tired. The main attending surgeon had taken a bit of a nap at around 4AM...When they started to close again I just told him that I need to leave. He doesn't need me for the closing. Any tech can do that. The main plastic stuff is done and that's what he really needs me for anyway...and not to have much turnover because we usually have about 200 needles to keep track of and rotating people in and out of the room makes it difficult. he thanked me for staying as long as I did since no tech had ever stayed as long as I did....then again, this case has never gone over 24 hours either. We did one last Friday and were done at about 11:30PM. He going to China so we have no Flaps for at least a month.
However, I have about 30 hours of OT last week....At my pay it's gonna be a nice paycheck on Thursday. Maybe. I'll prolly be disappointed. Damn taxes. |

So..this poor kid, 10 years old...been fighting cancer for a few months and a tumor has literally eaten away at his right Tibia a few inches below the knee.
So...we took from the top of the tibia(which makes up the bottom half of your knee) to about half way down...a good 8-9 inches of bone right out of there...after dissecting the leg as we went first and cutting the MCL, ACL, all the calf muscles, etc....and we replaced it with an adult cadaver bone...it was shaped, molded, etc to fit perfectly where his old leg was....put in a plate and screws and then a bone mesh/matrix to get his bone to grow into the new bone we put in....then we closed up.
We started at 7:30AM and finished at about 3:45. It was beyond interesting...Only problem is that by removing the top of that bone we removed his growth plate so that leg wont grow with the other so his growth may be stopped by the Dr.'s completely so he'll always be pretty short. He'll be able to walk in like 7-8 months...It was probably the coolest thing I've seen and took part in.
I've made it seem more simplistic than it was but oh well... |

How many times does Sosa ALWAYS suck on back to back games...and unless Wagner is dead, there's no excuse for him to have a day off...Even a hurt Wagner is better than everyone else in the BP. |

I also hate TomTom...Stupid GPS system shouldn't send you right down the middle of fuckin' Manhattan. Fuck you TomTom.
But the day was absolutely GORGEOUS!
Anyway, pics of Mets 7-2 win over the Braves. As for today. Fuck you Shawn Green...and Willie Randolph...Where's Endy?
I learned alot about guys like Scot Schoenweis...who comes into the game with Incubus' Megalomaniac playing...and he sucks, just like them.
Joe Smith comes into the game with Breaking Benjamin-"So Cold" playing. ( Peekchures ) |
